The Silk Road was a network of trade routes across the Asian continent that connected East, South, and Western Asia with the Mediterranean world, as well as North and Northeast Africa, and Europe. It began in central China and the Indian subcontinent, stopping somewhere near the Mediterranean Sea. China traded silk, spices, teas, and porcelain; while India traded ivory, textiles, precious stones, and pepper. The main trade routes in the Indian subcontinent were by sea or through areas in the north. In recent years, both the maritime and overland Silk Routes are again being used, often closely following the ancient routes.
