In fact, in the ancient China, only the rich could wear garments made up of Silk. Thankfully it’s different time now and we ordinary people can also have these gorgeous clothes. If you want to know more about silk, just come to Hangzhou, the right birthplace of silk.

Here’s a Silk Town, also called Zhong Guo Si Chou Cheng in Hangzhou, the capital city of Zhejiang Province. It is one of the new destinations of the itinerary for travel “Picturesque South Yangtze and Landscape of Zhejiang”. The street is the golden calling card of the ancient and historical Silk City Hangzhou.

It is located at the central area of Hangzhou City between Feng Qi Road on the south and Ti Yu Chang Road on the north, Xinhua Road on the east and Western Jian Kang Road on the west with a length of 1150m and an area of about 25,000 m2. The architectures on the street are of classically elegant styles and deep cultural atmosphere with various kinds of silk merchandises. The street incarnates the grace and the beauty of Silk Road.

The featuring former Ming residence complex was rebuilt into the present Silk Town in 2002.

You can find silk fabrics, clothes, artworks, tourist souvenirs, neckties, scarves and various raw materials on this street. These products are sharing the markets home and abroad. The street is the largest of its kind in China; it has been awarded various honors by the government, as well as enlisted as a key wholesale spot by the former National Trade Bureau.

Silk is one part of oriental culture as well as traditional product of Hangzhou. Until now, The Silk Town is continuing to develop the connotation of silk culture by searching for newer and better qualities and consummating the marketing function. The Silk Town is expanding into a new National Silk Center for shopping and silk exhibition hall as well. The town shall be a must-go place for travelers in Hangzhou, China.

The silk town is known for low prices, but watch out for fake stuff. If you have the time, Hangzhou's tailors have the skills: get a tailor-made garment from one of the city's many needle-and-thread experts.
