water polluted---Hangzhou short of water
A phenol tank truck leaked out on June 4, on the Hangxinjing highway in Jiande County, Hangzhou. Unfortunately, it caused the pollution of Xinan River which threatened the safety use of water.When Hangzhou people started to concern about this, another event also attracted people’s eyes. Headwaters of waterworks in Yuhang District were also polluted by the organics which discharged by the industrial park. As a result, some local areas cut off the water supply and schools in Pingyao and liangzhu town suspended the class.
When these two accidents happened, the experts of environmental protection department were hurried to the scene and started to check the water quality.Meanwhile, major leaders of Hangzhou municipal government also arrived in Yuhang and Linan and began the investigation of the truth of pollution stuff.At present, all the enterprise in Linan Qingshan Lake industrial park were closed under the suspicious.
The Truth:
A 浙AM8993 tank truck loading 31 tons phenol drove from Gaoqiao chemical plant in Shanghai to Hongyun chemical plant in Longyou in the evening of June 4. But it broke down at a interflow section of Hangxinjing highway and the exit of Xinan River highway, almost 1.5 kilometers to Xinan River. Repair men were sent. However, a 浙HD8399 heavy goods vehicle ran into the broken one, caused the crack of the tank and the death of one repair man. Because of the darkness and rainstorm, about 20 tons phenol is flowing to the Xinan River with the surface water.
Xinan River is the upstream of Hangzhou important drinking water source, so, this accident had a great effect on the regular life of residents who lived in the downstream.Taking the experts ' advice and the water quality at that time, the waterworks in Tonglu County and Fuyang County suspent the water intaking and 552,200 people were in a shortage of water.
On June 5, some residents in Yuhang found a smell in the Tap-water.After the detection,benzene was found in the water. The pollutant source was targeted at Linan Qingshan Lake Industrial park. Now, the workers in Qingshan reservoir have already increased drainage to dilute the polluted water.
The vice managing director of Hangzhou Environmental Protection Agency Lao Xinxiang, said, "according to the latest data, the water quality of polluted drainage area have already reached the standard except the offtake which is the first spot of the accident. The related department have intercepted the ditch and used active carbon to reduce the consistency of the phenol.We promise that the main urban area of Hangzhou will have enough safty water for daily life."
We hope the suburb of Hangzhou will regain water supply very soon.
