Thousand-year stone sculptures found in northern China
A batch of thousand-year old stone sculptures had been found on the cliff of Yufeng Mountain in Hebei Province of northern China. It contains a 70-centimeter-height Buddhist sculpture and 81 lesser ones. By the side of the sculptures, there is a stone tablet with epitaph, but the words are so vague to be seen due to age.
Yufeng Mountain is located in the north of Beiguan Village, height about 50 meters. According to locals' sayings, the sculptures formed part of a thousand-year old Buddhist monastery, which was disappeared, on the top of the mountain.
The Buddhist images were carved on the surface of the cliff. They are lively with clear face expressions. However, it is sad to see the most of the sculptures have been damaged.
It is said that there had been a Buddhist monastery on the Yufeng Mountain, but floods often happened after heavy downpours which would seriously damage the foundation of the monastery. Decades ago, built a highway and the old monastery was then demolished.
