Qiao's Family Mansion in Pingyao, Shanxi Province (with new pictures)

The Qiao's Family Mansion, located in Qiaojiabao Village, about 30 kilometers away from Pingyao in Shanxi Province of northern China, was built during the reign of Qianlong Emperor (1711 – 1799) of the Qing Dynasty. The mansion had been the residence of famous Qing's financier and businessman Qiao Zhiyong. It is famed for being the setting of the Chinese film, Raise the Red Lantern, in which movie star Gong Li has played the leading role.

The mansion is arranged in a traditional manner with elaborated design and beautiful architecture. The architectural details such as dougong (arch) and eaves with colorful and golden decorations inside demonstrate the unique style of residential houses in northern China from the Qing Dynasty. It is interesting to see that the whole Qiao's Family Mansion layout is in the shape of a Chinese character "double happiness" (囍) if viewed from the a high place. It is also a castle-like construction.

The well preserved architecture of the Qiao's Family Mansion truly reflects the past glory and wealth of Shanxi businessmen. Let's have a look at the pictures.
