HK-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge to be built within this year

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge project has raised enough money and will start construction within this year, Premier Wen Jiabao said at a media conference after the closing of the second session of the 11th National People's Congress today.

The six-lane expressway bridge is linking Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau. The designed speed limit is 100 kilometers per hour. When completed, the transportation time between Hong Kong and Zhuhai will be shortened from 3 hours to just over 30 minutes.

The bridge is about 30 kilometers in length. It will be the longest sea crossing bridge in the world. The bridge starts on Lantau Island, via Tai O Village where is on the western tip of the outlying island in Hong Kong, crossing the Pearl River Estuary, and it will become Y-shaped that one end of the bridge will reach Macau while the other will go to Zhuhai in Guangdong Province.

Hong Kong provides tremendous support to the bridge project. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge will greatly benefit trade and tourism between Hong Kong, Macau and the Mainland.
