Music has a role to play in any religion of the world. And the music in Taoism, which is China’s indigenous religion, has rich ethnic style and traditional characteristic.

Wudang Mountain, one of the most sacred mountains of Taoism, offers the listener a good collection of such music. The Taoist music is played at fasting, meditation, celebrations for the gods’ birthdays, prayers, religious services, and so on, as Taoism believes it is a means of communicating with the gods, subduing evil spirits, cleansing the soul, and providing inspiration for the believer while bringing him inner balance and harmony – in a word, bringing the listener closer to “Tao”.

Both vocal and instrumental music are involved in Wudang Mountain Taoist music, in classic and elegant, but varied patterns: solo, chorus, and so on. In religious rituals, vocal singing is especially important for the lyrics convey the prayers of the service. Melody and lyrics form a harmonious blend. The rhythm is sometimes solemn and peaceful, expressing the vigor and force to drive away evils, and sometimes lively and light-hearted, expressing good wishes. In meditation practices, the music creates a heart-soothing holy atmosphere.
