The Fengshui of Residence |
Objectively speaking, Chinese fengshui scientifically belongs to Study of Living Environment in international society. Originated from the primitive period, formed finally in period of China under the reign of King Yao and Shun, Fengshui as a systematic knowledge bloomed in Han and Tang Dynasties and eventually went up to its summit in Ming and Qing Dynasties. In some ways, Fengshui is the treasured experience that humankind collected in its long-term activities and living. For instance, facing the sunshine, sheltering from the rain and wind, preventing the fire accidents, getting close to the water source and benefiting the daily life, these become the basic theory of Fengshui. In accordance with the current study, the basic structure of fengshui theory was fixed in Tang Dynasty.
Fengshui as a philosophical term firstly appeared in the period of Fuxi. Fuxi thought by reference that the earth experienced a period of feng and shui. In Jian Yi Jing(简易经, Simple Book of Changes), Fengshui was firstly officially mentioned and written. Qingyi, a student of Pengzu who was an immortal in Chinese myth and the forefather of Xuzhou, northern city of Jiangsu province, defined Fengshui as: “内气萌生,外气成形,内外相乘,风水自成”(Interior Qi gestates, and the exterior Qi appears; the interaction of interiority and exteriority gives birth to Fengshui). Guo Pu(郭璞), a famous philosopher and study of Chinese fengshui theory, defined Fengshui in his works titled Zang Jing(The Sutra of Burial, 葬经) as “气乘风则散,界水则止,古人聚之使不散,行之使有止,故谓之风水” (Qi gets distributed by wind and stopped encountering the water, the ancient people put it together to avoid distribution and make it move to avoid the water, so it is named Fengshui). Today, the authoritative definition of Fengshui is the base landforms of residence and tombs like the directions of water and mountains. The superstitious people insist on that Fengshui gives a large influence on the family and descendants. The theory of Fengshui can be further explained like this. Taiji gives birth to Liangyi(two sides, namely, Yin and Yang, Positive and Negative), Liangyi makes four phases or five elements, Four phases give birth to eight diagrams, and eight diagrams show the world 24 mountains.
