Yangtze River Travel Guide


The Yangtze River (in China, it is usually called

Changjiang River

  nowadays, while Yangtze River was traditionally called by people before 1949, it was named after an ancient ferry called Yangtze Jin. Yangtze River originally just meant the section of lower reaches of Changjiang River, while because it was heard initially and misunderstood partially by western missionaries, the Yangtze River became the international name of Changjiang River) is Asian longest River and the third longest river in the world with the total distance of 6397 kilometers.




Originated from Tibetan Plateau, the Yangtze River passes through Yunnan Province, Sichuan Province, Hubei Province, Hunan Province, Jiangxi Province, Anhui Province, Jiangsu Province and Shanghai Municipality and eventually flows into the East China Sea. The whole drainage area of Yangtze River is up to more than 1,800,000 square kilometers and covers 20% total territory of China.

Yangtze River in the area from Chongqing to Yichang is marvelously arduous and magnificent. This area is generally called

Three Gorges

 area such as Qutang Gorge, Wuxia Gorge, and Xiling Gorge. The world largest water conservancy project, Three Gorges Dam, is also located in San Dou Ping of the midsection of Xiling Gorge in Yangtze River drainage area. Majority of China's freshwater lakes are dispatched in the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River. Some large lakes include Poyang Lake, Dongting Lake, Taihu Lake and Chaohu Lake. Yangtze River drainage area is the most prosperous area in economy with dense population. The major cities along the Yangtze River include Chongqing, Wuhan, Nanjing and Shanghai.

The gross water energy exploited from Yangtze River is up to 200,000,000 kilowatt. Yangtze River is most rich in water energy. The trunk line of Yangtze River for navigation is more than 2800 kilometers long. So it is called Golden Waterway for business and trade at home and abroad.

Yangtze River Delta is China's most dynamic place in economy. It is roughly comprised of Jiangsu Province, southeast part of Shanghai and northeast part of Zhejiang Province. Thanks to its rich precipitation rainfall and systematic and advanced waterways, Yangtze River Delta is also called as the water village. It has fertile farmland and the main produces include rice, cotton, wheat, cole, peanut, silk and shrink and fishes. There are also famous cities such as Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Changzhou, Wuxi and Zhenjiang, Yangzhou and Taizhou and so on. Shanghai was the largest city in China as the industrial and business city. Hangzhou and Suzhou are famous for their traditional culture and long history. They are also the famous travel destinations in Yangtze River area.

Three Gorges Scenery to be Submerged in 2009:

Natural Scenery: Gorge of Book on Art of War and Sword, Gorge of Dragon Gate, Phoenix Fountain, Gorge of Ox liver and Horse Lung, Waterfall of a Monk Stands Upside-down, Seven-gate Cave, Bayan Gorge and Guandao Gorge.                                 
Man-made Scenery: Daxi Cultural Heritage Site, Qu Yuan Temple, The White Crane Ridge, Zhang Fei Temple, The Ding Mansion, The Unknown Mansion, Dachang Ancient Town, Feng Jie, The Kong Ming Stele, The Calligraphy Wall, Meng Liang Ladder, The Dragon Back Stone, Pipa Zhou, The Chu-State Tomb of Guling and The Path Qutang Gorges.

To be Partly Submerged in 2009:

Natural Scenery: Bawu Gorge, Gorge of Dropping Jade, Wu Gorge, Qutang Gorges, Lu You Cave and Kong Ling Gorge.
Man-made Scenery: The White Emperor's Town, Shi Bao Stockade, Feng Du Mountains, Huang Hua Cheng, The Plank Road on the Ning River, Hanging Coffins in the Dragon Gate Gorge, Xituo Ancient Town and Zhongzhou Ancient Town.
New Attractions to be Appeared After the Implementation of Reservoir in 2009:
Canyons: The Little Three Gorges, The Temple Gorge, Tianjing Gorge, Lotus Gorge, Parrot Gorge, Seven-sister Gorge, The 13 Gorges of the Wu River, Ziyang Gorge, Tiankang Gorge and The Crescent Gorge.
Lakes: Sandouping, the White Emperor, Shibao, Fuling, Wuxia, Dachang, Wanzhou, Kaixian, Qukou, Gaoyang and Nanxi.
Caves: The Dragon Palace, Lotus, the Summery Ice, Shuangxi, Tiankang, Longgang, Huilong, Xueyu, Daguan, the Fairy and the Black Dragon.
