Xiahe Travel Guide

Located in the Southern Gansu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, western China, Xiahe County was officially established in 1928. Its name was derived from the River Daxia here. Deep valleys and high mountains are commonly seen in the county, and traditionally Xiahe was a place of military importance in China. It is known as the "Little Tibet" too, because the Tibetan Buddhism has been greatly developed and deeply rooted here since ancient time. In the beautiful prairie of Xiahe, wild leopards, otters and roes are roaming freely, rare plants like aweto and muskiness can be found. Natural mineral resources are rich here too.


Population in Xiahe is 80,000, the main nationalities are Han, Hui and Tibetan.

Geography and Climate

The area of Xiahe County is 8037 sq. km, the average elevation is 2,800 m above sea level. The annual precipitation in the county is 516mm. Because of the elevation, the summer in Xiahe is cool while the winter is very cold.
