Tongli Arts
Because of long history and rich culture in Tongli, it produced many local artistic specialties. Paintings in Tongli mostly have traditional Chinese images, auspicious patterns, famous figures and natural scenery. The paintings made combination with the art of Chinese embroidery; therefore, they have the essences of the two art forms. There are also paintings on Chinese fans, sandalwood fans, handkerchiefs, murals and decorative drawings. They are very aesthetic and elegant to combine the art of humankind with the works of Mother Nature. They are excellent for tourism souvenirs.
Tongli's carvings comprise micro carvings, stone carvings and tree root carvings. Micro carvings require delicate work and good craftsmanship. Small knifes are used to carve tiny images onto very small pieces of bamboo, ivory or even a hair! The artisan can carve a few lines of Chinese poem onto an ivory piece of size just as big as a rice grain! Burnt-paintings are made by using hot iron to burn images of figures, flowers and birds, onto wooden surface, rind, paper or cloth etc.
Paper cutting has always been a popular art in Tongli water town and many places in eastern China. People cut pretty pictures of animal images on the paper by using scissor, paper-cutting knife or just by fingernail tearing.
Having a history of over 400 years, image-inside-crystal is an art form seen from inside of a transparent glass pot. Ancient Chinese snuff bottles with delicate and beautiful pictures are great artifacts as home ornaments but they are no longer for snuff use.
