Shaoxing Water

Shaoxing is a place full of water. When people think of Shaoxing, water is always the first thing that occurs to them. Water has endowed Shaoxing with incomparable charm. Shaoxing is unusual and shining mainly due to the numerous rivers winding through the city and the rippling green Jian Lake. In other words, the beauty of Shaoxing, or the extraordinariness of Shaoxing all depends on water.

In Shaoxing, roads always go together with rivers and nearly all the folk houses border the water. The rippling water, the whitely-powdered walls beside the rivers, and the grey tiles above the walls together make a beautiful landscape. Shaoxing people might be the most envied, for they live in such a wonderful place. When they open their back doors, they can touch the soft water. And when they open their windows at night, they can appreciate the half-moon hung in the dark sky.

Water makes Shaoxing outstanding, but meanwhile the mellow culture in Shaoxing fleshes out Shaoxing water. If there are no black awning boats moving in the rivers, no old bridges across the rivers, and no folk houses of Shaoxing local color bordering the water, Shaoxing water will be as ordinary as a small anonymous river. Therefore, Shaoxing will not be Shaoxing, if it has no river and Shaoxing water will not be special, if it is detached from Shaoxing.
