The food that Shanxi people take in is mostly wheaten food, and it's no exception in Pingyao town. Wheaten food is not only used as staple food, but also cooked as ingredient. So do not order too many courses.

Like many other parts in China, tang-yuan is a necessary course in Pingyao on Lantern Festival. Pingyao people are well in making tang-yuan. They mix brown sugar, sugar, sesame seeds, osmanthus and nuts together as stuffing, then rolling gradually into a round with rice flour.

Local food can be tasted in Ming and Qing Street. E.g. Yunjingcheng- wide range of wheaten food, changshengyuan-yellow wine made snacks, tianyuankui restaurant-coffee.
