Kaili City Guide, Kaili Travel Experts- Absolute China Tours

Kaili-A pearl in Miaoling Mountains

Kaili City (凯里市, Kai Li Shi) is the government seat of Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture in southeast Guizhou, covering an area of 1,306 square kilometers, slightly larger than Hong Kong. It is not very far from the provincial capital Guiyang of Guizhou, just 190 kilometers away. Kaili neighbors the Qingshuijiang (Clear Water River) that breeds huge numbers of ethnic minority villages among which Xijiang Qianhu and Langde Shangzhai are the biggest and best-preserved. Miao nationality takes up approximately half of its ethnic population.

The climate is generally mild and all seasons are suitable for traveling. The colorful and unique aspect of the primitive simplicity among the local ethnic peoples adds much attractiveness to the breathtaking natural scenery, Xianglushan Mountain (the Incense Burner Mountain), the Golden Fountain Lake and karst caves, to name a few. Also, Kaili City is full of ethnic festivals and celebrations all around the year, 136 in total, which makes Kaili the “home of festivals”.

Xianglushan Mountain (the Incense Burner Mountain)

Xianglushan Mountain is about 1200 meters high with extremely steep cliff but a flat top in the shape of an incense burner as its name implies. The mountain has a saint spirit in local people’s history and it is the venue for celebrating festivals like Mountain Climbing Day which falls in Lunar June every year.
Few visitors climb to the top because the cliff stops them. However, if you are a rock climber, you shouldn’t miss it.

Mountain Climbing Day

Celebrating the Mountain Climbing Day is a thousand-year tradition of Miao Minority however different groups of Miao celebrate it in different months. Some celebrate it in Lunar March or April when is the best time for spring hiking while Miao people in Kaili near the Xianglushan Mountain celebrate it on 19th Lunar June.

Mountain Climbing Day has shifted to a social gathering which young people are looking forward to as time goes by, but it still remains some ancient ceremony like bull fighting and horse racing. On this day young girls and boys go sightseeing and hiking in the mountains, sing in antiphonal style while they may deepen their friendship or relationship. There’s no doubt that it creates lots of new lovers every year which actually is the basic purpose of the celebration. Of course it is not just celebrated by young people. The ancient tradition and the festival atmosphere always bring all the villagers together joining in the singing competitions, bird fighting, cock fighting, bull fighting, and horse racing. Old people usually climb to the top of the mountain for praying. During the 3-day festival, hills around the town are full of local people enjoying in a sea of dances and songs. “Tiao Lu Sheng” is another traditional Miao entertainment besides singing in antiphonal style. Men play the reed-pipe wind instruments and dance at the same time which always brings the parties to the highlight that everybody begins to dance and sing.
