Jade Buddha Temple

Shanghai Jade Buddha Temple was built in 1918, and located in the north of Anyuan Road and Jiangling Road. It is a building following the architectural style of Song Dynasty with a precise layout and harmonious structure. There are Heavenly-king Hall, Great Hall and Jade-Buddha Hall on the axes. On the first day and the fifteenth day per month or some traditional festivals connected with Buddhism, female and male believers are used to gathering here to pray for happiness and Buddha's blessing. It is really impressive and distinct that the temple in urban city is so popular, crowded and holy.

In 1882, Master Huigen of Putuo Mountain passed Wutai Mountain, Emei Mountain and entered Tibet and India for commemorating the Buddha. He got jade by excavating mountains with the help of local oversea Chinese. He carved the jade into 5 jade-buddha statues and carried them back to Putuo Mountain. He left the sitting Buddha and lying Buddha in Shanghai when he went by Shanghai. Subsequently, the Jade-Buddha Temple was built but destroyed in wars in 1918 and late it was removed to another place for restoration.

The first hall is the Heavenly-king Hall with three red gates; it is used for Mille Bodhisattva. The second hall is Great Hall and it is used for Sakyamuni, apothecary king and Amitabha, the hierarch of the western Elysium. The third hall is the abbot room. It is indeed a tranquil place in the hustle and bustle of big city, Shanghai, for calming your heart and comforting your soul.
