Dr. Sun Yatsen Mausoleum

Sun Yat sen MausoleumDr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum consists of the tomb of the great founding father of modern China and memorial establishments surround it. Covering a land area of 80,000 sq. m, the mausoleum is located in the Bell Mountain Scenic Area, Nanjing, China. According to the will of Dr. Sun Yat-sen (1866 - 1925), hoping to be buried in the Bell Mountain, the Nationalist Government has built the mausoleum there. The construction began in 1926 and completed in 1929. Dr. Sun Yat-sen died in Beijing on March 12, 1925. His relique was on the brink to be stolen by thieves in such a chaotic time. The vigilance of the guards of the coffin had prevented the stealing. In May 28, 1929, the coffin of Dr. Sun was transferred to Nanjing and buried in the mausoleum in June 1.

Traveling along the marble pavement, you will come to the majestic gate of the mausoleum which is decorated with cyan tiles on its top. To the Chinese, cyan represents the clear sky, which means fairness and justice. On the top front of the gate is the Dr. Sun Yat-sen's inscription of "The World is Commonwealth" which fully explains the aim he pursued all his life. Through the mausoleum's gate is a pavilion made of marble, in which a large stele of 9m high and 4m wide, was erected by Kuomintang in memory of Dr. Sun Yat-sen. On the stele carved 24 Chinese characters, run as "In June 1, the 18th Year of the Republic of China (1929), Premier Sun Yat-sen of the Kuomintang of China Buried Here".

There are 392 steps made of Suzhou granite from the Memorial Archway as far as the Memorial Hall. The hall is built like the style of a palace, the outside wall is made of granite from Hong Kong. The golden words of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, "The Nation", "The Civil Right" and "The People's Livelihood" are carved on each of the three archways in the Memorial Hall. In the middle, it has a 4.6m white marble statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen. He wears a long gown with his eyes facing forward with an opened book on his lap. This gesture demonstrates the wisdom of the great leader. At the foot of the statue, there are six bas-relief images that exhibit Dr. Sun's glorious life and struggles in his revolution of China. The gate of the tomb is in the center of the back wall. The tomb hall is a hemisphere in shape, the marble coffin of Dr. Sun Yat-sen set in the center. His white marble statue rests atop the coffin, under which the great founding father of modern China sleeps forever.
