Zhonghua Gate

Zhonghua Gate in NanjingThe Zhonghua Gate was called as the "Treasure Gathering Gate" at the time of China's Ming Dynasty. The architecture of the gate is in style of that period and it is the largest fortified city gate that still exists in Nanjing. The gate is the largest earthen-built one in China too. The width of the gate from east to west is 118.5m, while length from south to north is 128m. The design of the fortresses on the city walls is well structured and the layout of them is looked very in harmony with the whole scenery. The three earthen city walls and the four archways, of which the first archway is height 21.45m, each of the archways has double wooden door with an up-and-down heavy gate. There are 27 caves for soldiers to hide and to store military provisions with two wide paths for material transportation and generals can go up on the both sides.

In 1995, the Zhonghua Gate Square was built with the renovation of Zhonghua Road and Yuhua Road nearby, the vegetation area was greatly increased too, as well as introduced new lighting facilities. The Zhonghua Gate is a must go place to travel among the 13 ancient city gates in Nanjing.
