Tianshui is one of the origin places of the Chinese culture. It is the birthplace of Fuxi, one of the primogenitors of China, who was the first person to use ropes to make nets for hunting and fishing. Because of having tremendously long history and accumulating rich cultural heritage, it is said that there can be found one Neolithic site in every square kilometer of land in Tianshui. Today at Tianshui, there are 169 protected relic areas, including the Dadiwan site that has large amount of early Neolithic artifacts and the ancient Yangshao (a kind of Neolithic culture flourished about 6,000 to 3,000 years before present in the Yellow River region in China) artistic treasures. The Maijishan Grottos in the outskirts of Tianshui are regarded as the "Oriental Museum in Sculptural Art", the caves contain about 7,700 beautiful sculptures made from 4th to 20th Centuries. Great tourist attractions surrounding the Maijishan Mount are the Botanical Garden, the Cacti Cliff and Hot Spring Resort.



People

The population of the Tianshui city is 3.5 million, the main nationalities are Han and Hui.

 

Geography and Climate

The moderate climate in Tianshui is excellent for growing economical crops and fruits. Today it is one of the most productive bases for apples. Forest covers 26 per cent of Tianshui's total 14,000-sq. km land area. The highest temperature in July is about 33 degrees Celsius, the winter is longer than summer and quite cold. The peak season in Tianshui's tourism is from September to November.
