Hong Kong Dollars are usually accepted in Shenzhen. Generally speaking, you should receive changes in Hong Kong Dollars when you use them to pay. However, many businesses will only agree to accept them if they can give you change in Renminbi without including the exchange rate difference of around 4.5%. For large transactions you are better off using Renminbi. HK$500 notes are difficult to pass in Shenzhen.

When changing money remember to bring your passport. Banks can get busy and delays are common, so it is wise to change large amounts when you go instead of lining up for half an hour everyday. ATM machines are available in plenty of locations.
