Leaving mark on Great Wall costs US$120

 

For roughly 120 dollars, travellers to China's Great Wall can leave their marks on a recent-man-made wall built recently in the name of preventing graffiti on the genuine structure. The management office of the Juyongguan section of the Great Wall in Beijing built the fake wall and will charge 999 yuan (124 dollars) as cost for carvings on each brick.

Juyongguan's management said they hoped to meet tourists' need and desire to leave something behind -- usually their name or words of love-- while discouraging them from carving words  on China's best-known cultural relic, Great Wall.  The Great Wall in the past suffered greatly from knife-carving when it receives four millions visitors almost a year. Due to the lack of law and rule protection. The Great Wall is the major victim of injust carving. The newly-establsihed fake wall will meet the travellers' curiosity and need, and it will largely relieve the threat of The Great Wall from visitors

  
Less than 2,500 kilometers (1,500 miles) remain of the original 6,300-kilometer structure first built in the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC). It was rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) to keep out northern tribes threatening the Chinese heartland.

 

Some experts have shown their dissatisfaction and criticism on this charge. Some people said it is harmful for Great Wall protection because such a rule negatively useful for civilized consciousness during the touring time.
