Tangxi is in the North of Hangzhou
, adjacent to Deqin County of Huzhou, about 20 kilometers from Hangzhou Downtown. The famous Grand Canal
is passing through the town and it brought this town economic advantage in a long history of China
until the train and plane became the main methods of transportation. As an old water town in the Southeastern (Jiangnan) region of China, the typical white-wall, grey-tile houses in the town demonstrate a culture nostalgic and different from the fast developing modern China. This tour gives you a chance to look into this quiet but vigorous place.
In the town, you will see the Tongji Bridge which is the only existing 7-hole stone bridge on the Grand Canal. You will walk along the alleys and visit the old shops along the streets and try local snacks. You may have a chance to see the traditional way of making niangao (rice cake).
