Leshan or "happy mountain," on the Southwestern fringe of the Red Basin in Southern Sichuan, about 120 km from Chengdu, is a prefecture-level city located in the Sichuan province of the People's Republic of China. Leshan is home to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral and the Leshan Teachers' College.  The Leshan Giant Buddha, a statue of Maitreya (a Bodhisattva usually represented as a very stout monk with a broad smile on his face and with his naked breast and paunch exposed to view) in sitting posture, is located to the east of Leshan City, Sichuan Province, at the confluence of three rivers, namely, Min River, Qingyi River, and Dadu River. The statue, built during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), makes itself the most renowned scenic spot in Leshan City. It is the tallest stone Buddha statue in the world. In 1996, the Mount Emei Scenic Area, including the Leshan Giant Buddha, the largest stone-carved buddha in the world, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Mount Emei is located in the city of Emei Shan which is governed by Leshan.
