This category of hotels are mainly those modern hotels in China with a relatively longer history, mostly built in late Qing Dynasty and the period of the Republic of China, namely, from the last decades of the 19th century to the first half of the 20th century. China witnessed dramatic changes over this period, its economy, politics and culture being consistently under heavy influence from foreign countries. And hotels, as long as they keep running till today, often bear marks of this period of history. The architectural styles of these hotels are often a combination of both Western and Chinese. And a number of them were more or less associated with famous personalities of various circles including politics, stage and screen, academia, etc. For instance, Albert Einstein, Charlie Chaplin, Bertrand Russell, and Ulysses S. Grant (former U.S. President) were accommodated in Pujiang Hotel when visiting Shanghai. It is certainly great fun for a traveler of today to take the same hotel, or even the same room, as the celebrities of about century ago. The decoration and furniture including telephone sets in the hotel rooms are often old-fashioned. Taking such a hotel is not merely taking a hotel room, but having a conversation with history of modern China.
