The Hotel is really nice - especially if you paid only 368 Rnb per night for the room for 3 nights. That price was good for the standard if your from the west and there is two of you. Rooms really nice and cosy, bit small but well appointed. It also rather new, nothing worn or dirty that I saw.However, and this really get my goat so I'm going to write it here (though it could aplly to almost every hotel I have stayed at), when the say is over the hotel suddenly becomes "fully booked" unjtil you cough up double or triple the price. OK, in high season maybe, but this is the middle of winter, the place is empty (actually it really quite nice that way). In fact everywhere I have been in this town thats tourist oriented is almost empty. Then suddenly in flash the place is fully booked??! Well, if you pay 100% more then suddenly you can stay in the "fully booked" hotel.I am hacked of at hotels doing this. If they are sooooo busy, why don't they say to travelers already staying "hey, we're booking up fast, are you sure you don't want an extra night.... etc etc" In Thailand where control is a little less organised I keep having to book online an extra night or two then display my booking receipt to the astonished fibber at reception. Unfortunately in China there isn't a develped market of agents that can sell you extra nights at a decent rate without the fibbing hotel knowing.So - looking at my scores they are good but dented by the fully booked thing. if you want nice hotel in XI'an this it (at the right price of course) - don't pay more then 400 rnb or you will be disappointed. Pay less and you will be very hapy with yourself. However, if you take their cheaper rates, you wont be allowed to stay any longer, they want you out as fast as possible.Other points - breakfast very good, mini bar good, location is very tidy and nice, set back from the main road in picturesque square. XI'an is a nice place and most things are open very late indeed. If you want to know more drop me line!Oh, if you are arriving by train and have a lot of luggage don't walk, try and get a cab, its near but not if your carrying anything heavy, and the trip should cost about 10 rnb. I just did Everest Base Camp, so I'm no wimp :)Enjoy! More

Although there was nothing I could pinpoint as being disappointing with the Grand Mercure, this was my least favourite of the seven hotels we stayed in during our two week tour of China.The Grand Mercure is situated in Remnin Square which is occupied by the swish five star Sofitel and a rather bleak-looking Chinese hotel that I didn't note the name of, and the Grand Mercure.At the time of our stay, the hotel appeared to have two idential reception areas although only one was manned - this being the first entrance you arrive at from the road that runs through Remnin Square. We had trouble finding our room on the 5th floor as this seemed to be in the deserted part of the hotel which could not be reached from either of the lifts in the two reception areas. However, the room was fine and looked down over the gardens at the front of the hotel. The shower was a little weak compared to our other Chinese bathrooms, but there was bathrobe and slippers provided. There was a large console next to the bed for lights, TV etc that looked horribly complicated, but while we were out for the evening they had been switched on for us and the beds turned back.The Grand Mercure's breakfast was superb but didn't appear to have either its own bar or restaurant open for guests. This did not matter at all as our first dinner was taken in one of the huge dumpling restaurants by the Drum Tower in the centre of Xi-an and the second evening we skipped dinner altogether.We walked back to the Grand Mercure from the centre of Xian on both occasions. This was a good 20 minutes walk along a busy road, and on our first attempt thought we had got terribly lost. Panic was starting to set in until we saw the Sofitel looming up in front of us. We fortified ourselves with a beer in the Sofitel bar (approx £7 for a glass of Pauliner beer!).Do try to wander through the Muslim Quarter in the evening, and the friendly bars and restaurants of Defu Lu (a small street towards the southern section of the city wall) are well worth visiting, especially if the weather is warm and you can sit outside. As well as the Terracotta Warriors, we spend a morning at the Little Wild Goose Pagoda, the Han Tombs near the airport and walked the city walls. More
