Stayed twice on a recent business trip. On first impression it seems a liitle stale but the place really grew on me. It is a Chinese government hotel and was overhauled for the Olympics.Big bright More

I have never felt so deceived & ripped off by a hotel, and that is saying a lot having spent 7 months in China...We called the hotel reservations hotline directly a week before our arrival and was told by a so-called 'Sales Manager' that our 2 night stay in a standard room would come to RMB$1288. When we arrived at the hotel the person who checked us in told us that our stay would amount to RMB$1488 including breakfast (which we did not request) and spent 10 minutes arguing about before he agreed to change the price back to RMB$1288. He then told us that double beds were not avaliable in standard rooms, and that we would have to pay an extra RMB$200 for a double bed - so we ended up sleeping in a room with 2 single beds with no breakfast.We were put on a non-smoking floor, but the whole place smelt like burnt old carpet. The room & bathroom were reasonable sizes, but there was no facial tissues avaliable and they gave us rough, cheap toilet paper - not what you would expect for a 5 star hotel. The room had a balcony which looks onto Chang An Avenue, but you cannot turn off the balcony light and the curtains inside the room don't close properly, so you've got a light shining in your face for the whole night.Friends advised us that most hotels can organise day trips to the Great Wall at reasonable prices (most of our friends paid ~RMB$600-$700 for a taxi to take them there, wait and take them back to their hotels), but when we went to ask the concierge about this, they insisted we hire a driver & personal guide for RMB$700 PER PERSON. They refused to book a taxi for us, claiming that taxis were not trustworthly. We ended up asking the concierge at the Raffles Beijing Hotel next door to organise a taxi for us.The final insult was when we checked out of the hotel - We were told to pay RMB$2576 instead of the agreed RMB$1288, as they then claimed that RMB$1288 was the PER NIGHT rate, not the total cost of the stay. The front desk manager claimed that there was no way possible that their Sales Manager would offer the rooms for less that RMB$1000 per night as it was a 5 star hotel etc etc. We got on a 3rd party hotel booking website (ctrip) and showed him the Beijing hotel was only listed at RMB$607 per night (+ 15% service charge), but he did not relent - changing his story and claimed that we were 'upgraded' (which we were not told and did not agree to at check in - and if this was true, I dread to think what a 'standard room' would actually be like) and that it was not possible for him to only charge us RMB$1288 for 2 nights.We ended up moving to the Courtyard Marriot 1 block away - their RACK RATE was only RMB$850 pn + 15%. We probably could have gotten an even better price if we booked ahead of time, but we were just glad to be out of the Beijing Hotel. More
