Pros: Beautiful courtyards. Amazing breakfast. Parrots. Helpful staff. Great hutong location. Free Wifi. Beautiful room.Cons: Very hard bed. Kind of pricey for China. Not the easiest access. Skimpy on TP.The Double Happiness Courtyard Hotel is a beautiful hotel in the hutongs of Beijing (specifically, the Dongsi hutong). The hotel and its courtyards are beautifully decorated. There are even myna birds and a parrot out in the entry in the mornings. The breakfast is amazing... a huge spread with some of the best Chinese food I've ever had (stir fry in the morning? Delicious!!). The staff are excellent and helped us with so many things like calling taxis, translating place names for us to give to taxi drivers in other cities, and letting us keep our bags there after we checked out. A big plus also was the free Wifi. I had a few problems though with this hotel. I know that beds are notoriously hard in China, but this was ridiculous. It was by far the hardest, most uncomfortable bed during our 2-week stay in China, and we even slept in trains. Also the hotel seemed a bit pricey. It wasn't extremely pricey but it was kind of expensive for China. The good points outweighed the bad, though. I would definitely stay here again. We really enjoyed our walks through the hutong to and from the hotel. Not very easy for taxis to drive around in. We had one taxi driver who refused to drive into the alley; not that we blamed him.Like others have said, the hutong felt very safe, even at night. They are the most charming little neighborhoods with little family-run shops and restaurants. On our less adventurous days we took advantage of the McDonald's that was about a ten-minute walk from the hotel. (Come on, it was our first time in China! lol) There is also a very large store (WuMart) next door to the McDonalds where you can get just about anything you need. The Dongsi subway station is next to the WuMart near the back of the parking lot. We booked through Agoda and got a reasonable rate (lower than I saw anywhere else). It is a good idea to have the hotel's phone number with you so that your taxi driver can call them and get directions (they get totally lost). I went to Beijing on a business trip. I like to travel and experience new things this is why I chose a Hutong hotel. The building is old, in good condition and very authentic. As many others are saying, it is charming and welcoming and yes it has free wifi. I had reserved their smallest and cheapest room, I was alone and I don’t mind small rooms. However, at my arrival the surprisingly friendly staff deemed it necessary to move me to a bigger room (I am 6’ 1” and 265lbs) free of charge. I still got to spend the first night in the smaller room which at the end was the one I preferred. The smaller room was more authentic; it had stone floor and brick wall when the bigger one had modern wood floating floor and wall paper. Also the bigger room had toilet separate to shower when the smaller one had toilet in shower, no big deal. The hotel has a couple of cozy terraces where you can relax and rest at ease. It also has a sizeable balcony which gives you a little glance on the life of the local neighbors. You might even come across the resident scruffy alley cat which seems to have no time to take care of his image.Breakfast is included and offers many tasty local Chinese dish. Depending on the crowd, you might have to get up early if you want a seat. The staff is very helpful and super friendly, they were already joking around the first day. The staff is also young, always present, knowledgeable and speaks English very well. The hotel is on Dongsi sitiao, a small and populated little alley. Somehow when you enter this alley you are leaving the busy, modern and noisy Beijing. The walk to the hotel through the alley is an experience in itself. You will be passing by interesting restaurants, some big enough for six people, supermarkets about 60 square feet, a police station, an old man that interrupts his walk to have a sip of tea from his Tupperware™ container and all kinds of other people. Everybody in the alley have seen a Caucasian before, you wont feel like the elephant man amongst them. All of this within a surprisingly quiet and serene environment where you can hear your footsteps or what is going on inside the homes.I came back late one night, little tipsy, and walk through the dark alley feeling perfectly safe. The staff of the hotel stayed up waiting for me. As soon as I walked in, they closed the front gate behind me, I said zàijiàn and we all joined the people’s republic for a good night sleep… More
