Mengle Great Buddha Temple(勐泐大佛寺)
was built to memorize a beautiful Dai Minority queen who was a pious Buddhist during Ming dynasty (1368-1644), which was destroyed during a war in 1848 and what we see today was rebuilt in 2007. Notable for its peculiar shape which resembles a sitting Buddha, Mengle Great Buddha Temple, the largest Theravada Buddhist temple in China
, is the most sacred and important religion site of Dai people.
Several hundred years ago, Buddhism was transmitted southwardly all to way from India to its neighboring countries such as Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos before it reached Xishuangbanna
Dai Autonomous Prefecture. Theravada Buddhism not only advocates practicing good deeds and cultivating mind to achieve enlightenment, but also preaches the absolute obedience to the law of Buddhism and the ruling class, thus it is highly appreciated by Dai Minority’s rulers from the beginning. Sparing no effort to promote Theravada Buddhism by launching the massive construction of temples and towers, these rulers’ efforts turned out to be fruitful. During the past hundreds of years, Buddhism has penetrated into every aspect of Dai people’s life, which not only shaped their art, culture, economy and lifestyle, but also has inspired their hundreds of long narrative poetries. By now, the whole population of Dai people is converted into Buddhist and a mandatory practice prevails among them: Boys in their 7 or 8 years old will be sent into temples to study Buddhism for at least several years, otherwise, they will be considered as uncivilized barbarians all lifelong.
Among the over 500 distinctive Buddhism temples and 200 towers scatter among Dai people’s villages, Mengle Great Buddha Temple the biggest and the most holy temple in Xishuangbanna, is Dai people’s Mecca. During its opening ceremony occurred in 2007, there were 650,000 pilgrims witnessed this holy moment.
