Gezhouba Dam

Gezhouba（葛洲坝） Water Conservancy Project is the first Dam established on the Yangtze River. It is an important component of the Three Gorges Water Conservancy Project.

Gezhouba Dam is also one of the greatest water conservancy projects all around the world. The level of the design and construction technology is fully embodied in the latest achievements of current hydropower construction. It is considered to be the milestone in the history of China's hydropower construction.

The research work on Gezhouba Water Project began in the late 1950s. Earth breaking was on December 30, 1970. In 1974, the main project was formally implemented. The whole project is comprised of two periods. The first phase project was finished in 1981, and the second phase was finished in 1988. The whole project was thoroughly finished in 1988.

Gezhouba Water Conservancy Project has the function of power generation, efficiency improvement in water transportation. The power-generation capacity is 15.7 billion kilowatt hours. Its Annual savings is equivalent to 10.2 million tons of raw coal. Gezhouba Water Conservancy Project plays an important part in energy structure, coal reduction, relief of oil-supply pressure.
