Zhuruwan Scenic Area

According to the historical record, King of Wu Kingdom (this is a national policy in Han Dynasty, The first emperor wanted to stabilize his family’s top superiority for ever in ancient China, hence he largely assigned his relatives or sons to be the kings of local kingdoms to help him govern the different areas ) Liu Pi of Han dynasty widened Gangou waterway, which was part of Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and then dig out the water channel called Zhurugou, which connected waterways of Huaihe River and Yangtze River with east area of salt production. Zhurugou played a great role in salt transportation and material transportation, since then, Zhuruwan waterway became the important cargo port.

In the early period of Sui dynasty, Zhuruwan waterway has extended to Yiling Town, Gaoyou, Sheyang Lake and so on. Later at the cost of more than 3.6 million labor forces and more than 2 million casualties, four parts of the channel such as Yongji waterway, Tongji waterway, Gangou and Jiangnan River were connected with one another, which made the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal with more than 1700 kilometers long appeared. It regulated most of the Chinese water conservancies. It becomes the most valuable and durable man-made river.

In 2003, President of France Jacques Chirac in the company of Jiang Zeming served as the China’s president at that time highly spoke of this ancient canal. Zhuruwan is the source of the first man-made canal in the world. On the both sides, there are many historic relics and many cultural landscapes. Anciently it was the first port before entering Yangzhou from north. Many emperors in the past visited this port of Yangzhou.
