Gulangyu Isle

Gulangyu, separated from the main island by the 500-meter-wide Egret River, with an area of 177 square kilometers, enjoys a laudatory title "Garden on the Sea." The original name of the islet was Yuan Zhou Zi. In the Ming Dynasty it was renamed Gulang, meaning ''drum waves", because the holes in the southwestern reefs hit by the waves will make sounds like the drum.

Gulangyu Isle is a famous music and tourist island in Ximen, Fujian Province. With an area of 1.87 sq km, the islet provides visitors with a splendid music circumstance, intriguing tourist attractions.

The isle remained to be uninhabited until the late Song Dynasty. A Li family living in Songyu Islet moved to the isle and gradually grew into a big clan. After the Opium War, the isle became a public concession shared by the UK, the US, France, Germany, Japan, etc. With the introduction of Christianism, the western music widely spread in the island and integrated perfectly into the locals’life, which brought about the characteristic music culture of the isle. The isle has a piano museum and an organ museum. There are more than 100 old and well-known music families and the locals often give family-run concerts at home, which is a folk activity of Gulangyu characteristics. The family-run concerts are just like a sort of flower blooming here and there in the isle. They show the local people’s passion for music.

Besides the mellow music culture, the isle boasts beautiful tourist attractions. The Sunlight Rock scenic spot is the most beautiful one. It is composed of two parts: Sunlight Rock and Qin Park. Sunlight Rock is famous for its attractive natural scenery. Climbing up to the rock top, you can appreciate an aerial view of the surrounding islands and Xiamen City. Qin Park is connected to the rock by the ropeway. It is an amusement park. It consists of Bainiao Garden, Hero House, etc.

Haoyue Garden

Haoyue Garden is another important tourist attraction. It takes up an area of 30,000 sq m. It has a massive bronze statue of Zheng Chenggong, a patriotic general, and his followers. The statue is 13.7 meters long, 4.7 meters high.

The Dragon Head Hill

The Dragon Head Hill, Hoisting Flag Hill and Hen Hill stand in a line in the islet. Overlapping peaks foil the blue water, white clouds, green trees and bright flowers. The air in the islet is fresh. The entire place is free from any sorts of vehicles and is particularly quiet. All these render an atmosphere of a fairyland.

The architecture in the islet varies greatly in style, Chinese and foreign. Thus the islet has a laudatory title "the World Architecture Museum" The residents here love music very much, and the number of the pianos possessed is in the leading place in the nation, though there is only a population of 20,000 people. Thus the islet is praised as the "Piano Islet".

Today, Gulangyu is listed as one of the nation's major scenic spot. The main sites of interest here include the Sunlit Rock, Shuzhuang Park, Gangzihou Bathing Beach and Memorial Hall to Zheng Chenggong, which are visited annually by millions of people from all parts of the country and the world.

Shuzhuang Garden

Built in the style of "Yihong Garden" described in the novel "Red Chamber Dream" it is like an emerald flower set upon the seaside. Popular as "A garden Within Another Garden on the Sea, it was constructed above the sea. Seated in the Meishou Hall and sipping tea, one is so carried away as though floating in a painted pleasure-boat upon the misty boundless sea. In its excellent layout and novel designs, the Garden harbors infinite variety of changes, alternating tranquility with movements. 44 bridges span the wavy sea. Monkey Cave, and the twelve minor caves of "Maze Cave" all take a grotesque and amusing shape. The pavilions in the garden built half upon the land and half over the sea are picturesque.
