Yamdrok Lake
The Yamdrok Lake also owns some elegant and vivid names, like Coral Lake and Green Jade Lake. Coral Lake is named for its irregular shape. The lake has many short streams winding into the nearby mountains, making the lake looks like coral. Green Jade Lake is the implication of its pure green water, as smooth as the surface of fine jade.
As one of the top holy lakes in Tibet, the lake is said to be the female guardian of this area which, as the locals believe, will bless and protect them. Every year many devout pilgrims from both in and out of Tibet come here for worshiping, which adds much dignity and mystery to the charming Yamdrok Lake.
The lake area is also the largest water bird habitat in southern Tibet. Every winter large numbers of birds fly here and stay on the banks or islets, including swans, pigeons, yellow ducks, cormorants and barhead goose.
The lake is rich in fish, Tibetan fish, plateau carps and so on. Its annual production can amount to 200 to 300 million kilograms. And a large portion of the production is sold on inland markets out of Tibet.
Visitors may charter a vehicle or take bus to Yamdork Lake, and normally the trip lasts about 2 hours. Taking a bus, you need first go to Yarlung Zhangbo Jiang, then change to a rented car to Yamdrok Lake. A jeep containing 6 people costs 1500 to 2000 RMB yuan per day.
