Zezhol Monastery

 The monastery is situated on Zezhol Hill of Juen village, Denggen county, Chamdo area, which is 37 km away from downtown. it is recovered and rebuilt in 14th century. The name Zezhol means six peaks, due to its surrounding topography.

The old Bon faith, which had ruled Tibet, had to retreat to untraversed regions after its failure in religious contest with Buddhism. Zezhol is one of the few largest Bon monasteries existing in Tibet; there are still followers. The most complete Bon religious Rituals are still performed here. Its religious college can interpret Bon sutras and teach old and mysterious cultivation methods as Bon Yoga. In particular, the monastery still maintains a weird Bon religious tradition - naked group dancing.

With an altitude of 4800 meters, Zezhol Monastery becomes the highest monastery in Chamdo area. However life on the snowy hill is not so easy, there is still no electricity now and monks practice Buddhism under a very hard condition.

In recent years, owning to the donation from preachers of inland, the road to Zezhol Monastery was built and put into use. And it provides much convenience for people who want to visit the monastery.

The best time for worship is from late June to middle August. There will hold the annual Buddhist activities and sorcerers’ dance at the end of June.

Travel tips:

People usually first go to Chamdo, and then charter a vehicle to the monastery. Admission fee is RMB 15.
