East Stream Bridge

East Stream Bridge (溪东桥) in Sixi Town is a stacked wooden arcade bridge. It was first constructed in 1570, rebuilt in the tenth year reign of Qing Emperor Qianlong and in the seventh year reign of Emperor Daoguang. The bridge has a length of 41.7 meters, a width of 4.86 meters and a span of 25.7 meters. The bridge crosses the Dong Stream in the town, so it is called East Stream Bridge. It is correlated with Beijian Bridge across Bei Stream, and their construction styles are all like centipede, so people call them “Twin Bridge”. In fact, these two bridges were built by master and apprentice. The master finished the Beijian Bridge, and East Stream Bridge was done by apprentice, hence the name “the master and apprentice bridge”. On the East Stream Bridge arch 15 corridor houses are built, of which the middle three are Alhambresque main houses and the raised several are lofts. A picture of “twin codfish spraying water” was drew in the ridgepole, under the ridgepole, there are so many artistic paintings in lively style, such as “Tang Monk goes on a pilgrimage”, plum, orchid, bamboo, chrysanthemum etc.

The Lion Peak and General Peak are not far from the East Stream Bridge. It was said by local people that this bridge and the surroundings are in the geomantic mode of “a general plays with a lion”. Invisible under the green hills and clear water, the red bridge becomes more sweet and graceful.
