Shengzhou Chenghuang Temple

Shengzhou Chenghuang Temple is located at the south foot of Lutai Mountain in downtown Shengzhou. It is a famed structure in south China. The temple was established in 1345. It endured long-time corrosion and white ant fretting and was restored for 11 times in history. The existing building was restored in 1804. In recent years, the local government has renovated the temple for several times. And now it takes on an excellent appearance. Zhu Xi, a famous poet in South Song Dynasty, inscribed “Xishan No. 1” For the temple when he visited Shengzhou. Thus the temple is also called Xishan No.1 Building. The temple is grand and dignified. The building materials are carefully selected. The decoration in the temple is in perfect harmony with the entire construction. 

Shengzhou Chenghuang Temple is top of the range in Zhejiang Province. It consists of a folding screen, a platform, a ritual gate, a stage, aisle rooms, Chenghuang Hall, and the back hall. The buildings in the temple feature exquisite carving. The stage is extraordinarily beautiful. It is 14.2 meters high, 5.17 meters deep and 5.17 meters wide. It has 115 pieces of drama-carving. The dramas are all well-known and popular among the public. In 1989, the temple was acknowledged as a key cultural site under provincial protection. It was opened to the public in 2002.
