The original name of

Jian Lake

  was Mirror Lake. According to folktales, it came about because Emperor Huang once threw his mirror in the lake. Jian Lake is the mother lake of Shaoxing city as well as a well-known historic lake with a history of over 1800 years. According to Record of Prosperous and Harmonious Kuaiji, in 140 A.D., Ma Zhen, an official of East Han Dynasty, led the civilians to build dams to hold the floods in the hope of controlling the floods and irrigating the farmlands, and later there formed a lake. The lake is often folded in water mist, which makes the lake carry a mysterious air. Due to its beauty, it has attracted plentiful men of letter from different eras.
