  after he lost at the war against Fu Chai, the king of Wu State. He took the region around Goucheng Mountain as his temporary capital.

The chief peak of the mountain is 660 meters high. In the mountain, there is a pavilion, where, according to folk tales, Gou Jian once lived. Besides, there are other historical sites including

Yueshan Temple, Fanli Temple, Sha Zhan Tou, Da Zhang Wu, Shen Wu Shan Tou, Daopi Rock, Shejian Rock, Xianren Cave, Fengdong Stone and Hoof Marks

, etc. All these sites have their own stories. The Hoof Marks were left by Gou Jian’s army when they retreated to Goucheng Muntain. It is said that Gou Jian ordered his army to go up the mountain backwards and leave reversed marks so as to confuse the enemy. The troop of Wu State following behind saw the reversed hoof marks and thought that Gou Jian left Goucheng Mountain. As a result, they chased after Gou Jian in a wrong direction. It is amazing that the marks still exist today.
