Sanya Daxiaodongtian Scenic Area

 

 

Located 40 kilometers to the west of Hainan Island's Sanya City, Sanya Daxiaodongtian Scenic Area (三亚大小洞天风景区) has a total area of 22.5 square kilometers. Although the scenic park is newly developed, the Taoist legendary relics here may have more than 800 years of history. In the Song Dynasty, a Taoist master had been a hermit here because he loved the tranquil and beauty of Nanshan Mountain. He built Taoist temples and preached Taoist's philosophy in the area. The Immortal Alter, Immortal's Foot and ancient poems that recorded the travel of the Taoist master are the relics from that time. The Taoism says that it has 10 Big Dongtians (Big Immortal Mountains), 36 Small Dongtians and 72 Holy Lands in China, there is a Small Immortal Mountain located just below the seaside cliff.

It is interesting to know also that Huang Dao Po, a woman who mastered in spinning and weaving in Hainan Island in late Southern Song Dynasty and early Yuan Dynasty, introduced her advanced technique to the mainland through ferry that started from Sanya.

The wonderful scene of sea, mountains and forest makes Daxiaodongtian one of the best tourist attractions in south China. Here, you will see the coast of Yazhou Bay stretches hundred miles and the white waves hit the coast gently. The bizarre rockeries by the Mother Nature are eye-catching.

The longevity of local elderly people in Sanya City is famous throughout China. The life expectancy here is above 80. It has the people with oldest ages in China today. The old Chinese saying, Shou Bi Nan Shan (寿比南山), literally "wishing you live long as people living in Nanshan" is originated from here. The excellent tropical environment and the dense forest of old trees provide fresh and clean air to locals. There is no other place in China like this. Therefore, it is very suitable for elderly people to have a happy and comfortable life after retirement.

Transportation: There are buses that start at Sanya Western Coach Station as far as Tianya Haijiao, Nanshan, Yacheng, Gangmen and Huangliu. It just takes about 50 minutes to reach Daxiaodongtian Scenic Area.
