Chongwu Ancient City

Chongwu Ancient City is a special tourist attraction which gathers coastal scenery, historical relics and folk custom together. It is the only well-preserved stone city in China. Located in the southeast coast of Huian County, Quanzhou City, Fujian Province, quite close to Taiwan Strait, the city was set up in 1387 by Zhou Dexing, an official of Ming Dynasty, to resist the attack of the Japanese pirates. Up to now, it has a history of more than 600 years. But, its ancient city gates, city walls, and folk houses still remain in good condition. Walking along the old city wall made of stone, you might be curious about how many heavy fights happened in its presence hundreds of years ago and how it worked to protect the Chinese from assault.

Inside the city, there are many memorial temples, which were built in memory of the heroes, who died in the battles against the Japanese pirates. And there is a temple for Guan Yu, where his statue is worshipped. Guan Yu was a famous general of Shu State during the Three Kingdoms period. He was worshipped by Chinese people because of his personal loyalty and splendid personality. Outside the city, there are many historical sites, too. The most attractive and meaningful one is Longhou Rock in Dazha Mountain, 3 km away from Chongwu Ancient City. On the rock, there are stone inscriptions written by celebrities. Meanwhile, the rock is a historical site of the New Stone Age.
