Qiao Family Mansion

Located 30 kilometers northwest of Pingyao, the Qiao family compound is famed for being the setting of the film, Raise the Red Lantern, starring Gong Li, was filmed. It has a pristine and imperialistic feel to the architecture here, and makes a great visit while you are passing through the ancient town. There are six courtyards, totaling more than 300 rooms, making a massive impression on all who come to admire the beauty. La casa de la familia de Qiao was built by Qiao Guifa, an formerly unknown humble tea merchant who eventually rose to riches and made this his home. It is considered an architectural masterpiece of ancient China.
