Shuanglin Temple(双林寺, Double Forest Temple translated literally) was a time-honored temple, and it is famous for its historical and cultural relics such as the Chinese Scholar Tree of Tang Dynasty, Steles of Song Dynasty, Bell of Ming Dynasty and Colorized Sculptures apart from the ancient architecture. These are all the valuable treasure and the colorized sculptures are the top representative. Originally, Shuanglin Temple was called Zhongdu Temple. As for the time of the establishment of Zhongdu temple, it can not be known. But according to the record of Gugu’s Stele(姑姑之碑) was built in 1011, and rebuilt in 571. Approximately, it has more than 1400 years of history. In Song Dynasty, named after “Shuanglin Rumie”(双林入灭)of Buddhist sutra, Zhongdu temple was changed to be Shuanglin Temple. Shuanglin temple covers roughly 15, 000 square meters and is comprised of 10 buildings. The Hall of Heavenly King in the front of the axles was reconstructed in 1499. The middle one is The Grand Hall of the Great Sage, Thousand Buddha Hall and Bodhisattva Hall. The hall of heavenly king was built on the basis of a tower-style dais with seven stories. The back is the Wuyingliangliang Hall and Zhenyi Memorial. Currently, there are 2056 colorized statues in different sizes, and they are the quintessence of Chinese sculptures in Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties.
In 1965, Shuanglin temple was listed into the provincial-level site under protection, and in 1987, the colorized statue gallery of Shuanglin Temple was built. In 1988, Shuanglin Temple was written into the list of National Key Cultural Sites. In 1997, Pingyao Ancient Town was listed into the List of World Heritage Sites and Shuanglin Temple was one of this site.
