The Compound of Cao Family
Located at Beiwang Village, approximately 5 kilometers away from southwest side of Taigu County(太谷县), Shanxi province, the Compound of Cao Family(曹家大院) is also called Sanduotang(三多堂, Three Surplus Hall). Close to National Highway 108, the Compound of Cao Family covers roughly 10,600 square meters, and Cao family used to be the leading rich family in the circle of Jin Merchants. Currently, there are about 277 rooms in Sanduotang, or Sanduotang Museum. The buildings have more than 400 years of history, and the basic architectural style of the whole compound belongs in the traditional local features of Shanxi province and boasts The Gem of Chinese Folk Residence and also one of the representatives of northern China’s folk architecture. The whole mansion is under the provincial-level protection and the general layout shapes a structure of Shou(寿, longevity), an auspicious Chinese character. There is an old saying: The people of Shanxi were good at business and financing. That is it. During Ming and Qing Dynasties, Jin Merchants represented by Qi Taiping(祁太平) was a dominant business group in China. And Cao Family was the top rich businessman in Taiguo County. The whole architecture looks like a Shou Character, and the whole architecture is quite grand and magnificent.Also it also looks like a castle, and the whole tall buildings are quite eye-catching. And the most famous part of the architecture is the yard of Shou, and that is the reason why this compound is also called Sanduotang：more blessing, more longevity and more sons, and three of these together were called Three Mores or Three Surpluses. The whole compound is comprised of southern and northern parts, and three large yards from east to west are in line. The whole architecture preserves innumerous treasures other than the valuable architectural complex of Ming and Qing Dynasty and the period of The Republic of China. Currently, it is a newly-developed site of cultural tour.
