In later history the garden became the house for the governors of Zhejiang and Jiangsu Provinces. The Xuyuan was occupied by the "king" of the rebellious The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, Hong Qiuquan. It was entirely destroyed by fire during a heavy fighting between the Qing and the Taiping rebels. The garden had been reconstructed during the mid-nineteenth century under the direction of the Qing government.

The garden served as the residence of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the Interim President of the Republic of China (1912 - 1949), where Nanjing was chosen as the China's capital. It was once the office house of the Chinese government at that time too
