At first, the lake was called "Back Lake" or "North Lake". To call it "Back" because it's located at the back of the Bell Mountain, and called it "North" because the position of the lake is facing the north of the ancient capital city. Moreover, the name "Xuanwu" means "The Northern God", so the meaning of names "Xuanwu Lake" and "North Lake" are quite the same.
The Xuanwu Lake
has suffered two great catastrophes in its history, the first was during the reign of Wen Emperor in China's Sui Dynasty, who destroyed the Nanjing City after he had eliminated the Southern Chen Dynasty. Therefore Xuanwu Lake had been disappeared for over 200 years. The second disaster was during the reign of Shenzong Emperor of the Song Dynasty, Wang Anshi, the then official in the region, put forward his opinion that the lake should be filled and leveled up, so the Xuanwu Lake was disappeared again that the nightmare of widespread flooding in the city had never ended until the Yuan Dynasty.
The First Emperor of the Ming Dynasty in China, Zhu Yuanzhang made the Xuanwu Lake to become a protective river outside of Nanjing's northeast city wall so the size of Xuanwu Lake shrunk again. During the early years of Nationalist's rule, the lake was called as Wuzhou Park, then in the 1950s after the renovation, the name Xuanwu was resumed.
