Linggu Temple

Linggu TempleOriginally called the

"Jiang Mountain Temple"

, the Linggu (Soul Valley) Temple is located at Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum area and 1.5 km to the east of Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum in Nanjing. It was built for the memorial of the master monk Bao Zhi under the decree of the Liang Emperor during the Southern Dynasties (420 - 589 AD). Bao Zhi (418 - 514) was born in Lanzhou, he became a Buddhist monk when he had grown up. In his middle ages, he could practice a lot of mysterious magic. His mastery in Buddhism had impressed the emperors at that time, they called him the "Divine Monk".

At the time of Bao Zhi's death, there were about 70 Buddhist monasteries around the Zhongshan (the Bell Mountain) area, of which the

Linggu Temple

was the largest. It has flourished during the later dynasties in China.

After the Ming Dynasty had chosen Nanjing as the capital of China, the first Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang chose the western side of the Bell Mountain as a place for imperial mausoleum. He ordered to move the monasteries from here to the southern side of the mountain.

Established in 1930s, the present

Linggu Temple

is a rebuilding at the original site of it. It was called Cemetery of Heroes in the Nationalist Revolution. Since 1949, the name has been changed to Linggu Park. However, out of habit by local people, the park is still called as the Linggu Temple nowadays. The temple has a hall with a triple archway at the entrance, the ceiling of the hall is covered with colored glazes and the side walls are red. The inscription plate "Soul Valley's Majestic Scenery" is placed above the middle archway. The crescent-shaped pool on the south of the entrance is for freeing of captured animals in ancient China. It was built by about ten thousand soldiers under the direction of the Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang.

The Hall without Girders is in the back of the entrance, it is the only building left of the original Linggu Temple. The naming is due to the construction of the hall has only bricks and stones, but no wooden girders. The hall was built in worshiping of the Amitabha (Infinitude) Buddha.

Behind the Hall without Girders are the Cemeteries of the Heroes Killed in Battles, which buried 1029 fighters died during the Northern Expedition (civil wars fought between 1924 and 1927) and the Anti-Japanese War (1937 - 1945).

Built in 1933, the Linggu Pagoda is the symbol of the temple, 66m in height, having nine stories and the base is octagonal. The whole structure of the pagoda is of granite and ferroconcrete. There is a spiral stairway as far as the top floor (252 steps in total). From the second level to the top one, eaves above the balconies which are for sightseeing purpose, decorated with blue-colored glazes.
