Old City of Kashgar

The 2,000-year-old Kashgar is a westernmost frontier city in China and the only one in Xinjiang that the China State Council listed as the historically cultural city. 

About 640 Uyghur households living in the Old City of Kashgar, which is located on a hilly slope that the highest point is about 400 meters above ground level, southeast of the much newer Kashgar city below. The houses are mostly two or three stories, constructed in randomly selected positions along the slope.

Local people have been living in these houses for seven generations. Streets and lanes are counted to about 40. Residents can go everywhere they like easily through these narrow, labyrinth-like but pretty lanes. Workshops for traditional pottery, ethnic hats and handicrafts of curiosity are dotted around the streets corners in the Old City of Kashgar.
