Jingdezhen Ceramic History Museum


Jingdezhen Ceramic History Museum is China’s professional museum of Chinese ceramics. It is located on Cidu Avenue of Jingdezhen. It was planned to establish in 1979 and opened in 1984. Traced back to 1700 years ago, local people of Jingdezhen begun to make ceramics. The peak time of porcelain making is during the reign of Emperor Kangxi, Emperor Yongzheng and Emperor Qianlong. Apart from the popularity of traditional styles of ceramics, many other styles of ceramics were also initiated. Some are celebrated overseas, although few foreigners know their source. All of these are on display at the museum. Many rare and treasured ceramics shown in different styles and colors are available as well. These ceramics themed with different names and decorations as well as glazed techniques are highly admired by international-market businessmen.

The area of the museum is 830,000 square meters. In museum, visitors can see the architectural complex of ancient kilns (the workshops of making ceramics) and residential architectural complex of Qing Dynasty. In ancient kiln workshops, visitors can see the show of ceramic handicrafts that the workmen use to make ceramics, and the procedures of making the duplicated porcelains of the ancient times. In residential architectural complex of Qing Dynasty, the development history of Jingdezhen ceramics as well as the exhibition of calligraphy and painting are both can bee seen. In the building of folk custom, visitors can see the show of folk custom connected with ceramic production.

Currently, there are more than 5000 articles of cultural relics. The number of the first-level cultural relics is more than 100, especially the samples of Qinghua ceramic handcrafts as well as the making techniques of official porcelain. There are many quintessential articles of porcelain. There is also a special display hall of Hutian Ancient Kiln Site; actually this hall is used for ancient ceramic research. Besides, the museum also issues the journal named Gu Ci or Ancient Ceramics together with Museum of Jiangxi Province.
