Anciently, Jiangyin was the important military site for enemy’s inland further invasion via Yangtze River. Especially in modern history, it played a great role in inland protection. Yangtze River is a geographical watershed to divide China into northern part and southern part, and the cultural water parting between northern culture and southern culture, so it is also called to be the mother-like river as Yellow River in northern area of China.
The century-old city, Jiangyin, backing on mountains and facing the Yangtze River, is a key stronghold. Yangtze River here with the narrow width of 1.25 kilometers is really beneficial for military-base establishment. It is the second important military site of Yangtze River other than Wusongkou, which nowadays in Shanghai. In Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), the government ordered to build up the gun emplacement on Yellow Mountain during the rule of Emperor Kangxi. Currently, there are 12 gun emplacements built in concrete structure, and all of them are the historic sites of Ming Dynasty, Qing Dynasty and time of Republic of China. There are 12 sites for cannon channels, soldier sheltering cave and magazines. Additionally, there is also one watch tower, three communication rooms, and one headquarters of general gun emplacement and sites of shelter.
In 1981, the site of gun emplacement in Yellow Mountain was listed into the provincial key protection unit of cultural and historic sites of Jiangsu province. Currently, the established door tower of Huangshan Garden, Huangshan Museum, Wangjiang Pavilion, Poem-writing Stele from Chen Yi have been preserved well.
