Tangyue Paifang Group

 

 

 

Paifang is the present that the history gives Huangshan Mountain. In history, Huangshan nurtured a lot of famous people such as Zhu Xi, Bi Sheng, Hu Shi, Hu Kaiweng, Daizheng, Tao Xingzhi and Huangbinghong and so on. In Shexian County, there were more than 542 Jinshi, 1532 juren. In many families, father and son were both the high officials, or the brothers were all the high-level officials. Especially it was the hometown of Chen Yu-Zhu Xi neo-Confucianism School, at that time the women were deeply poisoned by the feudalistic thought of loyalty to one’s husband and family and non-remarriage no matter that her husband died or not. For commemorating and honoring these outstanding representatives of women, the local authorities specially established these paifang to remember them. In Huangshan, there are a lot of paifang but most are destroyed, so far there are only more than 100 paifang well preserved. Tangyue Paifang Group is the excellent representative. Tangyue Paifang Group，in total, is comprised of seven paifangs in order. Three were established in Ming dynasty and four were established in Qing Dynasty. They outlined the profile of the ancient doctrines of Loyalty, Filiality, Self-Principle and Righteousness. In 1981, it was listed to be the province-level important protection site.
