Tram Ride

Tram ride
Tram Ride is a great attraction and a historical symbol of

Hong Kong

. Nowadays, tram is still a budget transportation method and an ideal mean for tour of the busy downtown in Hong Kong. By avoiding the local rush hours, you can just take a tram, relax and sit upstairs to enjoy the 75-minute journey from Kennedy Town on the west to Shaukeiwan in the east, or vice versa, during which you will have a full and magnificent view of the people's life and the city's buildings.

Hong Kong History

Due to the fast growth in population and economy in , residents' demand for a comprehensive transport system began in late nineteenth century. Britain approved the building of a tramway system on Hong Kong Island in 1901. Following year the Hongkong Tramway Electric Company Ltd. was established in England. Then the Electric Traction Company of Hong Kong TramHongkong Limited was founded and took control over the Hongkong Tramway Electric. Eight years later the name of the Electric Traction Company was changed to Hongkong Tramways Company Limited. In 1903 the construction of a single track system began and it ran from Kennedy Town to

Causeway Bay

.

In 1904 parts of the first fleet of 26 trams were built in the UK. They were then shipped to and assembled in Hong Kong. The tramcars were all single-deck, of which 10 trams were designed for first class passengers and the others were for third class, the seating capacities were 32 and 48 passengers respectively, and fares were 10 cents and 5 cents respectively. On July 2, tramcar No. 16 left the depot for its first test run and on July 30, the passenger service commenced.
Hong Kong Tram
The increasing demand in traffic had pushed forward the introduction of the double-decker trams in 1912. The tramcar was open-top with garden seats design. The first class occupied the upper deck and one-third of the lower deck. In 1920s the service was extended to the Happy Valley Race Course and introduced a double-track the route between Causeway Bay and Shaukeiwan.

During the Japanese occupation (1941 - 1945) limited tram service was provided, which only 12 tramcars were in operation daily from Causeway Bay to Western Market. But after the war tram service had been resumed.

In 1950s

Hongkong Tramways

had undertaken extensive re-designing of tramcars and built the Russell Street Depot. Number of tramcars had increased to 146, and colorful full body tram advertisements appeared on the road. In 1972 class distinction for Hong Kong Tramfares was abolished and new designs had been done in 1980s and 90s. In 1992 two double-deck trams made by Hongkong Tramways were exported to Birkenhead in the UK.

In 1986 the antique tram No. 28 was built for tram tours, private parties and promotional purposes. It is an open-balcony design with maroon sofas and equipped with colored light bulbs which make it glitter at night.
