Located on the scenic northeast coast of the Lantau Island, Discovery Bay is a self-contained residential and resort area that incarnates the exquisite life style in
The Discovery Bay, also nicknamed "Disco Bay" and
"Tai Pak Wan" in Cantonese, was developed by a local business group in late 1970s. Initially, holiday cottages were planned to be built in the area, but the transportation was quite inconvenient, at that time there was only hover ferry service to Hong Kong Island available and the rents for these villas were high. So the business group changed its idea, selling the un-leased cottages at comparatively lower prices. The Disco Bay had become a low-density residential area. In 1980s, the business group developed budget priced housing near the golf course, attracted many who were fond of the Western lifestyle in
Hong Kong. The population of the Discovery Bay was greatly increased during 1990s when the Airport Core Project had been implementing.
Today the Discovery Bay comprises low-density housing of European-style garden villas, with low-rise and high-rise residential properties, as well as a scenic beach. The
Disneyland is not far from the bay, and various infrastructural projects are to be completed under the government's strategic development on Lantau Island, so Discovery Bay's attractiveness will hardly be matched in the future.
